How to Reprogram Fuel Pump Control Module

Your fuel pump control module is the brain of your fuel system. It controls everything from the amount of fuel being delivered to the engine, to when it is delivered and how much air enters with it. In this article we'll explain how to check, repair or reprogram a faulty FPCM (fuel pump control module) so that you can get back on the road again.

Cut the battery's power.

  • Turn the ignition key to the "Off" position.

  • Disconnect the battery's negative terminal.

  • Connect a jumper wire to the positive terminal and another one to an unpainted metal surface on the car (such as a screw).

Remove the fuel pump fuse from the fuse block.

Remove the fuel pump fuse from the fuse block.

You can find the fuel pump fuse in your vehicle's owner manual, or by searching online. If you don't know how to do this, ask a friend who's handy with cars to help you out.

Locate the fuel pump control module and disconnect it from its bracket.

The fuel pump control module is located in the engine compartment. The control module is mounted on a bracket that is secured to the chassis.

The fuel pump control module is a small black box with wires going into it and no moving parts. The control module is connected to the fuel pump by one of its terminals, which you will disconnect later in this process.

Insert the new control module.

  • Be careful not to touch the terminals as you insert the new control module.

  • Make sure that it is seated properly in its receptacle on the engine bay wall and that all wiring connectors are connected tightly in their sockets.

  • Reconnect the battery's power, then reconnect the fuel pump fuse to its block on the circuit board bracket (see Figure 1).

The takeaway from this article is that you can program a fuel pump control module yourself. It’s easy and fun, and you’ll save money over taking it to the dealer.

The only hard part is making sure you have all of the right parts. If you have a friend who can help you with this, it will make things much easier.

There are two ways to reprogram the fuel pump control module. One is by using a high-pressure cleaner and another is by using a special tool. The high-pressure cleaner method is cheaper but requires more time and effort than using a special tool.
